Varsity is an established neighbourhood in the Northwest quadrant of Calgary. Varsity is bounded on the north and east by Crowchild Trail, on the west by the Bow River, and on the south by 32nd Avenue NW. Varsity was developed in the 1960s and early 1970s on a plateau to the north of the Bow River valley. The neighbourhood comprises three major area: Varsity Acres, Varsity Village, and Varsity Estates. It borders the neighbourhoods of Silver Springs and Bowness on the west side, and both Montgomery and the University of Calgary campus on the south side. The easternmost portion of Varsity contains the University of Calgary Research Park and is close to the Brentwood LRT station. The community has numerous parks that run through it and connect to the parkland along the Bow River. The area is prized for its unobstructed views toward the Rockies and to Canada Olympic Park across the river valley. Market Mall is the main shopping mall in this area.
Varsity Estates is the area west of 53rd Street and is built around the Silver Springs Golf & Country Club..
The community is mostly single family homes in a range of styles, with some multi-unit condominiums along Valiant Drive near Shaganappi, and some high rise apartment buildings on Varsity Lane behind Shaganappi Shopping Centre.
